Background:

Nick Schwartz, M.D. is a graduate of the Yale University School of Medicine.  He completed training in Psychiatry at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle and has a private practice in lower Manhattan..

Philosophy of Treatment:

"Many people enter treatment because they feel sad or anxious all the time and can’t figure out why.  They feel they have tried everything to make it better and nothing is working.  Frequently the answer is that we all unknowingly repeat certain patterns of relating to ourselves and others.  We have thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make sense to us, but can leave us with unsatisfying relationships.  Without satisfying relationships, it is hard to be happy.

"At the heart of these patterns of interacting are one’s emotional responses.  Therefore, I pay special attention to emotions in the work I do.  By bringing their unhealthy thoughts and emotions into awareness and sorting them out, people can have happier, more meaningful lives."

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD):

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a disorder of the brain that affects people’s ability to stick with one thing long enough to get it done.  This applies to their school work, employment, and their relationships.  Since it affects such a broad range of important functions, it can have a profound impact on their emotional life and self-esteem.

My treatment of ADD involves three approaches:

  • medications that have been shown to help patients quickly become more focused
  • skills training to compensate for difficulties in day-to-day life
  • counseling to address emotional difficulties that have resulted from ADD
